[ale] to module or not to module?

Generally speaking, what are the drawbacks/benefits of
compiling kernel features as modules rather than
directly into the kernel?

I just compiled 2.4 last night with what I thought
were pretty common specs, but my compressed image
jumped from around 650 kb for 2.2 to 1.3 mb for 2.4.
