[ale] Mandrake install on a IBM TP 240x

I have done an FTP install of Mandrake 8.0 twice and both times I had the
following problems:

When it got to the bootloader install it failed until I removed the floppy
partition. Then I got it to install the bootloader and finish the install.

After rebooting in the normal load it displays a blue welcome screen and hangs.
In the linux-nonfb and the failsafe load it hangs at the message "Warning:
unable to open an initial console".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
