[ale] specify interface for specific NIC?

Hi folks.

I'm adding a wireless NIC to a computer that already has three (eth0, eth1,
eth2).

The "problem" is that the computer assigns interface #s in the order that
the cards are found at bootup. So the wireless NIC now comes up as eth0,
and the NICs that used to be eth0/1/2 are now eth1/2/3. For whatever its
worth, the card I'm adding is a Orinoco PCMCIA card in a ISA adapter.

Ideally, I want the card that I added to come up as eth3, not eth0. Any
clue how to do this? I realize I could just go change all the network
settings and "deal" with the new numbering. I also realize I could change
the initd order of the PCMCIA init script so that it is run after the NICs
are configured. But as a matter of principle :), there's got to be a
proper way to specify this, either based on MAC addresses, slot #s, or
something. Any ideas?

Thanks.
