[ale] Cross-Platform Document Publishing

If I want to create and manage documents intended for hardcopy, what is/are
a good app and format to utilize if I want to be able to do it on Linux,
Windows, Mac, etc. without conversion issues (hint:  MS Office and Sun
StarOffice are not gonna cut it!)?  I want some help from the software with
respect to version/revision control.

What kind of documents?  Things like contracts, but also able to handle
imbedded drawings and images.
