Apparently, the Linux kernel NFS server *isn't* like this. Or at least
as far as this particular problem is concerned, it isn't. From what
I've been able to dig up, this is a known artifact of the Kernel NFS
server. Turns out exportfs can be used to unbusy the /cdrom mount.
Probably I'll end up making a couple of scripts for mounting and
unmounting the cdrom drive so I don't have to do it all by hand.

So far, I like it fine. Problems have been minimal(gpm couldn't talk
to my Logitech Bus Mouse, even though the busmouse module loaded OK.
This was fixed by a custom kernel compile, which I would have done
anyway. I assume the problem was a conflict with something in the
stock Slackware 2.4.5 kernel).

2.4 on the one machine I've installed it to so far. I'll probably end
up using 2.2 on the firewall box when I upgrade it, because as far as I
know 2.4 has no equivalents for the ip_masq* modules in 2.2.
