Full discloser first.  My comments below are based on my experiences
with my current employer AT&T.  Also, I just finished a tour with the HR
organization, so I have a pretty good feel of what they look for when
hiring technical folks.  I also was on a promotional review board for
technical positions within AT&T as well, and that adds more perspective
to future growth within the technical arena at AT&T.

Definitely get the degree.  A degree in CS will get you more than the
generic IT programs everyone is now offering, which are watered down CS
programs.  Most of them do not required the Math and Science that the CS
does.

Certifications are pretty much useless without the degree.
