[ale] MD5 Problems on RedHat7

I have been experiencing severe problems with MD5 and other checksums on
my RedHat7 box.  Has anyone else come across such issues?  I thought it
may have been an SMP problem because the box is a dual-processor PII
(300), but I tried running a single-processor kernel and got similar
results.
