I'm trying to connect to a corporate vpn via pptp, which is Microsoft's
solution for vpns. What I think is going on is that I'm communicating
with the vpn server okay, but the domain server which is supposed to
auth. me is not responding. I'm hoping some of the network gurus out
there can look at the info that follows and at least tell me if I'm
right. At least at that point, I'd know where to start digging. I can
put an incorrect secret in my chap-secret file and I don't see anything
different in the logs, so that's why I believe the domain server is not
responding.
The way this is set up in my chap-secrets file is as follows:
client server secrets ip
DOMAIN_SERVER\\my-id IP-OF-VPN-SERVER MY-SECRET *
Any insights would be greatly appreciated, since, if I get this working,
I can continue to stay Microsoft free in my remote work environment.
Here's what I see in daemon.log:
Jan 15 15:37:03 a (unknown)[27589]:
log[pptp_conn_close:pptp_ctrl.c:275]: Closing PPTP connection
Jan 15 15:37:17 a (unknown)[27623]:

established.
Jan 15 15:37:18 a (unknown)[27623]:
log[pptp_dispatch_ctrl_packet:pptp_ctrl.c:637]: Outgoing call
established.
Jan 15 15:37:18 a modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-108
Jan 15 15:37:18 a pppd[27626]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
Jan 15 15:37:18 a pppd[27626]: Using interface ppp1
Jan 15 15:37:18 a pppd[27626]: Connect: ppp1 <--> /dev/ttya0
Jan 15 15:37:18 a pppd[27626]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0>
<magic 0xaf3aa8b3> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Jan 15 15:37:45 a last message repeated 9 times
Jan 15 15:37:48 a pppd[27626]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Jan 15 15:37:48 a pppd[27626]: Connection terminated.
Jan 15 15:37:49 a pppd[27626]: Exit.
So that looks to me like the server is not responding to my LCP
requests.
Here's what I get from tcpdump:
1 0.000000 denali.atlnet.com VPN_IP TCP 1044 > pptp
[SYN] Seq=1814069017 Ack=0 Win=32120

I don't know that much about this protocol, but what I see above looks
like everyone one's happy. Suggestions? Insights?
