[ale] Alt key under X-Windows

Hello:

I've got an oddball problem that probably has a simple solution. I've got
a MS Natural keyboard with RedHat 6.2. Under some application the Alt key
does not work. This is really irking me!

Broken:
sawmill window manager: Alt-Tab does not work
emacs: No Alt-X or any other Alt commands
emacs -nw in an xterm: no Alt commands

Works:
minicom in xterm: works
minicom in gnome-terminal: works
netscape: works

I've changed my XFree86Config file to use a "microsoft" keyboard to no
avail. Any ideas?
