For some time now.  (For that matter, there are patches to 2.2 to do the
same thing..)

But it's worth mentioning that apps have to be compiled with the 64-bit
fd operators in order for them to handle large files.  You can't just
plug in the new kernel and expect to your favorite applications to
magically handle large files.

fwiw, Bash 1.x doesn't handle 'em, but bash 2.x does..
