[ale] Redhat install help!

Hello. Forgive my ignorance please.

I have a new IBM 7200 RPM 30GB ATA100 UDMA-5 hard drive which has Windows 98se on the primary active partition. There is an extended partition, and within that, a logical partition for linux. They were set up using Partition Magic.

I am trying to install RedHat 6.1 from a CD-ROM.

The problem seems to be that RedHat cannot recognize my hard drive.

When booting, I can see it probing for the drive, and then I get:

"hda: no response."

I have tried going into expert mode and trying to specify a couple of different drivers. I also downloaded the Ultra 100 controller from Promise.com and tried using it when RedHat asks for the driver disk, but it tells me the disk is not valid. (I'm positive I don't know what the hell I'm doing here.)

I also tried this at the boot: prompt:

linux hda = 3737,255,63

(I got these numbers from partition info.)

Still no luck.

I have slogged through two installation books and seemingly miles of online documentation but cannot find a mention of this problem, accept that a couple of people said the IBM drives can be tricky. No elaboration. All this documentation assumes too much knowledge!

I really need Redhat 6.1 because some development software I need requires it.

Can anyone out there help me?

I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks,
Erik
