In theory, the latter would be the case. A relatively simple application
(in terms of queries and relationships) with a simple data model should be
easy if you are careful.
However, based on my experience of the various MS data access schemes (like
DAO) and third-party ODBC drivers, a *robust* Win32 database driver for your
DBMS will be a foundation stone to success. If we are talking about low end
but mission critical applications (we better be if we are discussing
Access!), then you have to carefully consider if open source options are
going to meet the customer's needs.

Would these "tricks" be inherent to Access or would they be something that
might be coded into an Access app? That is, would an Access/PostgreSQL
client/server arrangement be inherently problematic or is it such that it
could work nearly perfectly if "MS-isms" were deliberately avoided?
