[ale] Bad drive?

Lots of IDE drives/controllers exhibit this phenomenon
in 2.4.x.  Most likely not a drive problem.

If you look at IDE/ATA/ATAPI Block Devices (in make *config),
under that there is an option: "Use multi-mode by default".
I don't know what that option does, but reading Help for it
suggests that it may help you out some.
