I don't think your /dev/video device is the proper type. Mine works (or at
least it did 4 months ago when I last messed with it)
$ ls -la /dev/video
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Jan 14 2000 /dev/video ->
/dev/video0
$ ls -la /dev/video0
crw------- 1 jkinney root 81, 0 Jan 14 2000 /dev/video0
