I recently attempted to install Linux on an old 486 laptop.  Suse 6.4,
Red Hat 5.2, Corel something or other, TurboLinux 6.0 all failed to
install for one reason or another.  I then dug out a version of
Slackware I received at the ALS and it worked like a champ.  One thing I
liked about the Slack install is that it listens to you when you tell it
what to install and not install.  Seems like my last few installs of
Mandrake and Suse installed things I didn't select.  The amount of free
space available after the Slack install was amazing as well.  Seems to
me to be one of the best 'small' installs I've attempted.

Many of the various versions Of Linux give you the option of installing
either a workstation or server version.  I know TurboLinux has separate
client and server versions.  I personally don't know that that is
necessary.  I think the main differences between a Linux server and
client is the software packages you're going to install.  Sure, there
are certain kernel options you'd select differently depending on whether
you're going the server or client route, still, I don't know that it's
necessary.
