Did you change read/write permissions on any files as root yesterday?

I only encountered the first part of the problem (I wasn't that persisent
with trying to log in, so who knows what would have happened if I had
tried again and again). In a misguided attempt to make my system safer, I
had denied important system files write permission. If you did the same
kind of thing, try logging in as root and changing permissions back.
