I'd start out by trying to communicate with the modem via minicom.  Was
the modem turned on when you fired up kudzu?

You mentioned lpt1, your modem doesn't have a parallel port does it?

How many serial ports do you have, might you have connected your modem
to ttyS1 rather then ttyS0?

For future reference, com1 == ttyS0, com2 == ttyS1 on a linux box.
