Or you could use the tr command which is on most systems.

tr -d '\015' < dosfile > unixfile

Use a different name for the unix version or your data's history!

instead of running dos2unix can't you just open up the dos file in vim and
type :set fileformat=unix ? Is this a true statments? It always seemed to
work for me.
