As you can imagine we have alot of chemistry names. I have a lab of
SGIs with Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane, Pentane, Hexane, Heptane,
Octane, Nonane, Decane, and Benzene. Benzene is the teacher station of
course! Other names are Walker named after Dr. Frank Walker, a previous
professor here who died not long ago. He contributed alot to the
Chemistry Dept. and the University. Students thought he was great so it
was sad when he died. We have Linus, Marie, Stern, Azide, Per, and
Erkki.
Names that I like are Aslan, Woody, Buzz, Hughes1, and Izzy for other
SGIs. Our firewalls have names like Razor, Plutonium, Barium, Thorium,
and Radium. I've got Blade, Arwen, Raven, Scout, and Tuna as well.
At other labs I've helped in setting up we had duttwall1 and duttwall2
for the inside and outside interfaces of the firewall. That is
practical but boring. How about Bohr, Elion, Curie, and Dirac?
The master plan used to historical or famous chemistry people but there
has been alot of diversion from that! I think naming is one of the most
fun parts of setting up a machine except for the moment you feel good
after solving a tough problem.
