[ale] PPPoe problems

We are trying to get PPPoe with Mindsproing working without success.
I suspect that it is having difficulty authenticating but I've not
beat my head against this particular wall (PPPoe) before.

The Mindsproing people said that we should use our existing Earthlink
account (for this new Mindspring DSL) and password for authentication,
though I'm suspicious of this.

The log file when debugging is enabled is:

  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x1b user="some_one at earthlink.net" password=<hidden>]
  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x8 <mru 1492> <auth pap> <magic 0x3de835>]
  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1b <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xfb34ca4> <pcomp> <accomp>]
  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x8 <mru 1492> <auth pap> <magic 0x3de835>]
  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: rcvd [LCP ConfRej id=0x1b <asyncmap 0x0> <pcomp> <accomp>]
  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1c <magic 0xfb34ca4>]
  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x1c <magic 0xfb34ca4>]
  Aug 8 20:18:40 barium pppd[808]: sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x0 magic=0xfb34ca4]

I created the following script to invoke it:

  /sbin/ifconfig eth1 mtu 1400
  pppd pty '/usr/local/bin/pppoe -I eth1 -L /etc/ppp/pppoe.log' \
       noipdefault defaultroute debug \
       hide-password passive persist name some_one at earthlink.net \
       lcp-echo-interval 30 \
       noauth debug ipcp-accept-local ipcp-accept-remote chap-interval 30 \
       proxyarp record /etc/ppp/ppp_oe.log

  # ktune

It was not clear what IP to use for eth1 so we just picked a random
private network and IP.

Any help gratefully appreciated,
