Those were your virtual consoles, Alt-F1 through Alt-F6. Usually a
reboot will clear any getty messages, or killing the PID's of the ttys.
fuser -k /dev/ttyc* will usually do the trick. Why this happens I have
no idea, but I see it every now and then on the SCO boxen I have to
support. Just by chance, are you using xdm to log in?
