[ale] xterm weirdness

Thanks again to everyone who sent in suggestions.  The eventual cause
turned out to be the font for the xterms - I had fixed things in the root
login, and then it reappeared under my normal login, until I changed
the xterm font.  Best guess is that the default font isn't quite kosher.
