   another thought... on my debian box the hostname is set on startup by 
the script /etc/rcS.d/hostname.sh  which has basically one line :

hostname --file /etc/hostname

perhaps it was modified for some reason to statically set the name rather 
than use the file... i.e. it looks like :

hostname sillyHostname


Also, the rcS scripts run first, of course... maybe someone in the later 
runlevel script dirs (rc1.d, etc.) is reseting it.
