Dow,

I was going to tell you that I have been using the Linksys and upgraded it
to firmware v1.36 and it has been working fine but you beat me to it. I
have had it up for about a 1.5 months with no problems. The connection has
dropped 3 times and in each case the Linksys could not seem to re-establish
a PPPoE session. Power cycling the bridge and the router fixed the problem.
This weekend I had one 24 hour period in which the PPPoE would stay up a
maximum of 5 minutes before requiring a power cycle of the bridge and
router. However, yesterday it was back to it's usual rock solid
connections. I can only assume that the problem was with my line or with
Earthlink.

I have been doing testing of IPSEC and have had problems with SMB mounts
over the tunnel. I have not been able to determine where the problem is
yet. I could be with the Linksys' implementation of IPSEC/NAT tunneling,
PPPoE, or with the IPSEC software. I hope to complete the testing in the
next month.

I have come to some conclusions though.

1. PPPoE is a pain. It is so much easier to troubleshoot
the system when you have fixed IP or DHCP.

2. The Linksys does a nice job of sharing the connection for
general surfing and keeping people off my machines. For
most people a product like the Linksys is a great idea.

3. I need to do a lot more testing to determine what the
limitations are of this type of technology.

4. Cool toys are getting cheaper.

happy surfing,
keith
