I have a Dell Latitude CPt 333 that works great with SuSE 6.4.

I use vmware to have Win95 in a window if I need it.  I can use
internally Samba to access my home directories on the host OS while
vmware also lets me access the parallel port for a local HP540 Deskjet. 
If I need a network printer, I can run vmware in bridged mode so Win95
can see the outside network directly instead of just seeing the internal
virtual network.  Unless you need external hardware only supported by
Windows, you can price you notebook based on Linux compatibility if you
use vmware.  I have impressed myself and several other people with Excel
in full screen 1024x768 mode and then with a press of a key, there is my
shells and the power of Linux/Unix!  I also got a Palm Pilot to sync
thru the serial port using the Windows Palm software.  I would recommend
finding a laptop that fits your screen and color desires but still isn't
too expensive.  I don't mind carrying a heavier laptop if I get a screen
size I can live with.  I also would recommend checking out the heat
production of the CPU if you plan to set the thing on your lap for very
long!  You can cook on some laptops the way the CPU runs so hot!

There is nice printing software from www.easysw.com that is designed for
Unix and Linux systems.  I use it in production on several Unix systems
here at work.  It is compatible with most new printers and almost all
older ones.
