Michael,

I had that same chipset once, this may or may not help with Xfree86 4.0, but
make this one change for starters:

Try those for starters. If you want my old SiS config, I can email it to
you, but of course the monitor settings would be all wrong. (Easier and
better still to just buy a better card, and disable the crummy onboard SiS
in BIOS.)
