Thanks. That is what the help panel was telling me, but I didn't
understand. The lookup which actually worked was using the name _after_
the parenthesized 'handle'.

 $ whois FGC-REQ000000001795 at whois.arin.net
 gets me the needed response.

I captured a session log, and maybe I won't have to ask again.  Maybe.
