you need check a few things:
1. check smb.conf for 'security = user' or 'security = server'. Comments
around them are self-explantory.
user level security will allow to use account credentials on the Linux box
to authenticate youself.
2. what windows platform you are using? check for
platform-specific pitfalls under /usr/doc/samba-VERSION/
