	Jennifer,

I would equate this to X strangeness, and not to the windowing
environment which you use. I can say that, with my Voodoo3 card, the X
(4.0) server tends to change my console font colors from their default
grey'ish color to a red, blue or green when I flip from the X server to
console. I never had such problems when using X with my S3 Virge under
XFree 6.3. My advice, though not to your favoring, would be to simply not
switch between X and VC unless you have to, and keep up with the latest
versions of XFree; hopefully the later versions of the X server which you
use will have worked out this problem.

If everything does hose up, I would switch back to console, find
the pid of your X server, then send it a SIGTERM. Given that X is still
relatively happy, it'll catch the signal and should (hopefully) signal
your window manager to go down more gracefully than ctrl-alt-backspace. If
"kill -TERM `ps waux | grep X | grep -v grep | cut -c 9-15`" doesn't work,
then find your desktop environment's starting point ("gnome-panel" or
"startkde") and send them a SIGHUP or SIGTERM.
