What did you "upgrade" from?  Do you have a user named xfs? My /etc/passwd
file line:

xfs:!!:101:101:X Font Server:/etc/X11/fs:/bin/false

My RH5->5.1->6.0 has worked very smoothly. I have added a multitude of
other programs as source-to-binary-rpms. 

What did you reconfigure in /etc/X11/XF86Config?

If you are running Gnome, it wants to have working network or at least a
real hostname.
