Hello - My name is Adam Carroll and I  was referred to this address by
F.S. Nooruddin, who is working on his CS PhD at Tech right now. I got my
CS undergrad back in '95. Anyway, he suggested that I run a Linux-DHCP
problem that I am troubleshooting by the ale group.

I have BellSouth's ADSL service and am trying to get a Linux box to
access it. I have success with a Windoze machine, but not Linux yet.

So far I have tried both pump and dhcpcd with no luck. I am currently
sticking to dhcpcd only as I've heard that pump has more problems of its
own. With dhcpcd, I have looked at a tcpdump with -evvn -i eth0 options.
sends a message on 0.0.0.0.68 that I presume to be a "hello" message to
any listening dhcp servers. After that, there are a few arp messages of
the format
          arp who has <IP address> tell <IP address>

followed by a reply from BellSouth's dhcp server on port 67 with a C:<IP
address> and S:<IP address> that I presume to be its response with my
requested dhcp data for my client and their dhcp server. However,
immediately after this, my client sends its "hello" over again until it
eventually times out. The time out message states that a valid dhcp
server response was not received.

I have gone through the mini-how-to from the web many times and have
tried what I believe is everything they mention. I have tried using a
sleep statement during startup, I have tried the -r option to force a
release, and I have tried the -h option to specify a particular hostname
- in this case, the same hostname that winipcfg shows me when I am
connected via Windoze. All of these result in the timeout, but the
tcpdump changes slightly. Sometimes, there is no apparent reply from the
dhcp server. Usually when this happens, I get some rip messages in
there.

So that leads me to my next point. Unfortunately, my network knowledge
started and ended at Ma Tech during my undergrad networking classes. I
am not even sure anymore how things like my loopback device impacts my
ethernet device, etc. Given this, I am not sure of the significance of
arp packets and rip packets being flown around.

I have attached a tcpdump output, my lo (loopback) cfg file, my eth0
(ethernet) cfg file, and output from the dhcpcd program's debug logging
and syslog entries.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
