[ale] enabling remote access. . .

I have three machines at home running linux and I am having a problem
logging into the other machines. I can ping the other machines, the
masquerading box is working fine, all seems to be well until I try to
telnet or ftp to one of the other machines. When I try to telnet, it gives
me the error message that all of the network ports are busy and closes the
connection. When I try to ftp, it gives me the error "connection closed by
remote host." I assume that I need to enable remote access or something,
but don't have a clue where to start. any information that someone could
point me to would be greatly appreciated.

Also, could someone tell me where to go for information about starting an
Xserver session on a remote machine. thanks alot.

Sorry for all of these simple newbie questions, but I'm learning. . . :o)
