BK> I take it that you are trying to telnet in from
another system and not trying telnet locally.

I checked '/etc/inted.conf' and it was fine. I then tried a local telnet
from my other desktop, which worked when I specified a numeric IP address,
but would not resolve the Linux box's name, even internally. I think I tried
both from outside, but will retry. At any rate, it sounds like the problem
is in our net setup or name service.

With regard to '/etc/hosts', I connect through a dynamic IP address and
don't know in advance what my originating IP will be. That's immaterial if
I'm being filtered out at the ISP, I think.

BK> Check the /etc/inetd.conf file and insure telnet is
enabled. If that is the case, the try telneting
in again, and let it wait a couple of minutes.

I'll try that. Thanks.
