Tom,
[Assuming the ppp link is your only network connection:]
Be sure that your ppp options include -defaultroute. I don't know
how Kppp works, but there will probably be a file called
/etc/ppp/options that contain the options for pppd.
Alternatively, you can do the following at the command line
by hand (as root):
route add default ppp0
