How about: (of course, this assumes you have the ppm/pnm/pgm tools
installed.
Also, I don't have any xwd files to test this on, and I'm heading out the
door, 
but this *SHOULD* work)

% xwdtopnm filename.xwd | ppmtogif > filename.gif
