If the dialtone sounds funny now (when listening through a regular
phoneset), then it's entirely likely that the phone co.'s eqpt. is
damaged.  Your modem may still be fried too, but if it's OK then phone
eqpt. damage can keep it from connecting.  I'd suggest calling it in.

At the very least, please get a surge protector that you can plug the
phone line into.  I went ahead and got an APC Back-UPS 500 for $150 -
even though the dollar hit was heavy for me at the moment (I'm "between
jobs," as one learns to say euphemistically), I realized that now would
be the absolute WORST time to have a fried computer or corrupted disk
drive - and we're having a few thunderstorms a week lately.  Week before
last, we had one little power blip that crashed both my machines and,
well, I ran right out and got the UPS.  Last night we had another blip
and the UPS just beeped once - no crash.
