What apps are you running when you run out of colors? Do you have a
large colorful background?

I know little regarding how memory affects # of colors, that said...

What color depth are you running? I was running my Millennium (4meg)
card at 32 bpp, but found that E was eating up too much memory there, I
dropped down to 16 at 1280x1024. There are other things you might want
to look at. If you use 'translucent move' for window moves, it takes a
lot of memory.

As for how much memory X is actually using, this should be output by X
when you start, doing something like 'xstart 2>/tmp/x.err' will trap
this output for you and you should see something like:

(--) SVGA: videoram: 4048k

If your memory is probed properly. Since you have an entry in your
config file specifying the amount of memory, you probably will see
something like:

(**) SVGA: videoram: 4048k

This may not be exactly what it looks like, but the key is that (--)
indicates probed values, (**) indicates values you supply.

Last thing. I wanted to upgrade my 4meg card to 8meg, but the cost of
the memory from Matrox was more than a new card. I found a vendor who
sells upgrade memory for these cards, I paid 38.09 for a 4 meg upgrade,
installed it yesterday and works like a charm. They've got a 4 meg
upgrade for the MM II for $22.00. That is, if your card is upgradeable,
as I understand it, some are not.

Select video cards option and go to page 4.

Now, my only dealings with these folks has been this one purchase, and
I've had it but one day. Works so far, and X automagically picked up on
the upgrade.
