[ale] ORACLE Issues

		Joe -

Thanks! But I think I need more info. What are you
referring to as Oracle Names Service? The TNSnames.ora has not changed
since 1995. So we are truly perplexed as to why suddenly, it won't work.

Also, I can log into Oracle (just like always) from my
network machine. It is only the actual Oracle server which can not resolve.

I appreciate you time & effort!

This error indicates that the Oracle
Transparent Network Substrate
could not resolve the server name provided
to it in the connect
string. The connect string looks something
like
				USER/PASSWORD at SERVER_NAME, and Oracle has a
couple of mechanisms
to map the SERVER_NAME to an actual machine
and database instance.
If you are using ODBC, the connect string
will be configured
as a property of the ODBC connection,
whatever that means on
				your platform.

I believe that the error you are seeing
means that the
client is not able to derive a server host
name from the
SERVER_NAME string. (If it could find a
valid machine
name, but could not contact that server,
then you would
be seeing a different error.) There are two
possiblilities:

				(1) You are not using the Oracle Names
service. In this case,
there is probably an error in the
TNSNAMES.ORA file on the
client machine. Depending on the underlying
network transport,
many things could be wrong, but make sure
that the hostname
(TCP) or machine name (NetBEUI) associated
with the connection
				string are correct. Look in
<oracle_install_dir>/network/admin on
				Oracle 7 installations, or
<oracle_install_dir>/net8/admin on
				Oracle 8 (I think - I only administer 7.x
servers at the
				moment).

				(2) You are using the Oracle Names service.
I have never used
this, so I don't know how to diagnose the
problem, but you
should probably be sure that the Names
service is actually
				running somewhere on your network.

				Hope this helps,
