[ale] Midnight Commander won't start

When I try to start RH 5.2's Midnight Commander I get the error

   tkmc: error in loading shared libraries
   /usr/lib/libtcl.so:  undefined symbol: stat

Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

The only thing I think I've done since installing RH 5.2 is to upgrade the
XFree-86 RPMs.
