Here's what I got from the video4linux list and it works:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
pre-install bttv modprobe -k msp3400; modprobe -k tuner
options i2c verbose=1  scan=1 i2c_debug=0
options bttv radio=0 card=0
options tuner debug=0 type=4

Of course the options are specific to my capture card.
