[ale] bogus error mesg...

Hi,
I was futzing around with my laptop and somehow messed up my user
account's X settings. I can start X from either root or a new test
account (so I don't think it's a global or a permissions problem), but
I can't seem to start it from my own user account. I've tried starting
fvwm2, wmaker, and twm, and each bombs out with the same error.
The error I get is
'waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE
"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" refcount is 2,
should be 1; fixing.'
Prior to logging out the last time I used my laptop (when X was
working), I was using some find $HOME/ -name '*~' | xargs -p rm
type commands. I didn't think I deleted anything sensitive, but
perhaps I did.
BTW, I'm using Debian 2.1.
Any ideas on what my problem might be or how to fix it, short of
reinstalling my (heavily customized) window mgr config files from
scratch?
