Try "linux S" at the "boot:" prompt to see if single-user mode will bypass that.
Also, download Tom's Root/Boot from www.toms.net/rb
IMO, this is the quintessential recovery utility.
It's a 1.44MB floppy formatted to 1.72MB and packed with utilities.
