The latest versions of ghostscript will drive most (all?) deskjets at high
resolution.  I use apsfilter.  Install the latest ghostscript package and then
grab the apsfilter tarball and work throught the installation.

apsfilter is rather nice.  It lets ou print almost any type of file--text,
postscript, jpg, gif, dvi--transparently.

It's quite possible that your ghostscript already can use all the resolutions
and all you need to do is install apsfilter.

(I should confess that I can't get ghostscript to turn off high resolution, but
then I didn't grab the latest ghostscript.  My printer is slow and uses lots of
ink, but it looks good.
