Thanks to all for the sage advice about video cards for XFree86.  I
exchanged the SiS 6326 and a bit 'o cash for a Matrox Millenium G200 and 
we're cooking with gas!  Had it installed, configured and X-windowing
away at 1600x1200x75Hz in less than 10 minutes.  Painless!
