There's a couple different ways to do it depending on the shell you're
running. Under pdksh and bash you can do something like this:
$ foo=$(whence ksh)
$ echo $foo
/usr/local/bin/ksh
$ echo ${foo##*/}
ksh
I don't know about other shells...
