[ale] Modem Problems

I need some help.  I have an external Practical Peripherals PM288MT II V.34 and
cannot get PPP to cooperate with this modem.  I have Red Hat 5.0 with KDE
currently.  I have been using the correct init string but cannot get any
response from the modem (even AT).  Also the modem is running fine under Win98
R3.

If anyone has any suggestions please pass them my way.  I appreciate any help.
