I don't recall which version of Red Hat you are running, but I had to
boot with the rescue disks this morning and did copy a file from the
hard drive to a floppy using cp.  When you say it won't execute, what
happens if you try to use it?

I think you're trying to use the cp command from your mounted hard
drive.  There is a version of cp available from the rescue disk.  Try
doing the cp without referencing the full path as in:

cp file newfile

rather than:

/mnt/bin/cp file newfile
