[ale] TeX and fonts

Being a graphic designer I have a ton of PostScript Type 1 fonts that I
have accumulated over the years. Unfortunatly, to reference these I have
to look at the little font sheets that came with them, or the ones I have
made on my own (for freeware and shareware fonts).
I've heard a little bit about TeX and that it's a great program for text
layout, etc. How much control does it give you? Can you have to
flexibility to layout documents like you would with a regular DTP program
like QuarkXPress or PageMaker?
The reason that I ask is that I would like to automate some way of
creating a font book for myself. I'd like to write some scripts that
would go through all of my fonts, alphabetize them, and then print out
pages with three or four fonts displayed per page. I was thinking I could
do this with Frontier or AppleScript and Quark on my Mac, but thought
maybe there would be an easier Linux based solution.
