First question regards named. I haven't been able to find any documentation
regarding this particular error message, so I'm hoping someone here has
seen it before:

Jan 14 21:11:26 gateway named[88]: sysquery: findns error (NXDOMAIN)
	on 155.229.1.69.50.229.155.in-addr.arpa?
Jan 14 21:11:26 gateway named[88]: sysquery: findns error (NXDOMAIN)
	on 155.229.1.69.esisys.com?

named version:
Jan 14 19:35:46 gateway named[87]: starting. named 4.9.6-REL
	Sat Jul 19 17:44:35 ED T 1997
	^Iroot at netgod:/u1/debian/bind/bind-4.9.6/named

It started when I upgraded our linux server from an old (1.5 years+)
slackware system to Debian 1.3.1. I've compared the two systems
named configuration files repeatedly but can't seem to find anything
amiss.

Could it be simply that this is what 4.9.6-REL logs when an application
attempts a gethostbyname( "155.229.1.69" ) (in which case I'd like to
filter the error message if at all possible), or is it indeed a configuration
error?

The second question regards the man command under Debian. It hasn't
worked on a single debian system I've installed since 1.3 was released.
I haven't been more aggressive in tracking down the problem because I
have a shell script which emulates man quite nicely, but I'd like to fix
the problem if it's at all possible.

All installations have gone cleanly and have started from scratch.

Symptoms:

(21:59:56) musashi at gateway:~$ man ls
Reformatting ls(1), please wait...

[waits here until killed with ^C, after which this file remains in /tmp:]

-rw-r--r-- 1 musashi users 11488 Jan 14 22:01 /tmp/zman00687aaa

Process list as it sits in la-la land:
