[ale] Linux and SCSI controllers

I'm trying to get an idea of what SCSI controllers work best with
Linux.
Does anyone here have a testimonial or some performance data
they'd like offer on this topic?
At home I have an Adaptec 2940UW which I picked up fairly cheap
(compared to the retail price) which has worked quite well for me. I don't
do much intensive I/O at home, so there may be flaws in this configuration
that are not currently manifest.
Before the Adaptec I had an eight bit Future Domain SCSI
controller, purchased for ~$15 at a hardware swap meet. Despite relatively
poor performance it functioned flawlessly in both Linux and Windows 95. It
was rather slow, which I only fully realized after my Adaptec upgrade,
which resulted in a notable increase in transfer rate from my NEC 4x SCSI
CDROM drive. It's a pretty pathetic controller that can't keep up with the
600 K/sec transfer rate of a 4x CDROM!
The only trouble the Linux driver gave me was refusing to accept
config options at module load time and on kernel invocation. I had to
#define these in the driver source, which wasn't that big of a deal.
